Santa Clarita Valley International (SCVi) learners are taking local innovation all the way to low Earth orbit! In an unforgettable milestone for learner-led research, members of SCVi’s DreamUp Team Spirulina traveled to Florida to present their work at the annual Space Conference and experience the thrill of a lifetime: watching their experiment launch to the International Space Station (ISS).
While the primary mission of their journey was presenting their groundbreaking findings to aerospace experts and fellow scientists, the SCVi learners also toured the historic grounds of the Kennedy Space Center, immersing themselves firsthand in spaceflight history. The crowning moment arrived at the launchpad, where the team stood together to watch the rocket carry their months of hard work, preparation, and scientific curiosity straight into orbit.
Fueling the Future of Deep-Space Life Support
SCVi’s Team Spirulina is tackling one of the most critical questions facing long-duration space travel: What are the effects of microgravity on Arthrospira platensis (Spirulina)?
As space agencies set their sights on prolonged journeys to the Moon, Mars, and beyond, sustaining astronauts becomes a major challenge. Spirulina—a nutrient-dense, photosynthetic cyanobacterium—holds immense potential as a dual-purpose solution. It naturally produces oxygen through photosynthesis while simultaneously offering a rich, sustainable source of dietary protein, making it an ideal candidate for future bioregenerative life-support systems and fresh food production.
Now that the payload is safely aboard the ISS National Lab, astronauts will oversee the experiment in microgravity. Back on Earth, SCVi’s young researchers will run parallel ground control tests, comparing growth patterns, cellular behavior, and overall viability between the orbital and terrestrial cultures.
Inspiring SCVi and Beyond
From designing lab protocols in the classroom to presenting before aerospace industry leaders and witnessing a live rocket launch, these bright SCVi researchers have exemplified what dedication, curiosity, and teamwork can achieve.
The entire SCVi and Santa Clarita Valley community could not be prouder of these young scientists for pushing the frontiers of innovation. Stay tuned for exciting updates as Team Spirulina begins analyzing data from its journey aboard the ISS!
